No, according to a report from The Information, the search giant has purchased the handset division to enhance its hardware portfolio. It had previously bid for the handset unit in the $40 billion auction.
The newspaper cited anonymous sources saying that Motorola Mobility had not been sold to Google, but instead taken off of the auction block and become a corporate venture under Google's control.
In May, Motorola Mobility's handset division was sold to Google for $2.91 billion (US). The division had been on the block since June 2012, after it failed to reach a deal with Microsoft. Other bidders for the unit included Nokia, Foxconn, and Sony Ericsson.
Even though the deal had been announced in early May, the Google and Motorola Mobility announcement was delayed until June due to the US government shutdown.
The deal had also faced a hurdle when the European Union launched a probe into the Microsoft-Motorola deal, to determine if the search giant broke antitrust laws. However, the EU has since closed the investigation.
Since Google purchased Motorola Mobility, it has begun introducing its own devices under the Moto brand. For example, Google is expected to release its Nexus line of smartphones later this year.
